Breath Alcohol Test (BAT – Positive Result)
1. Greet and Verify
- Ask for the Labb Passport or Authorization Form and the donor’s photo ID.
- Verify that the information on the ID matches the authorization form.
- Once confirmed, proceed with the collection.
2. Move to the Lab Area
- Escort the donor to the lab/testing area.
- Retrieve a DOT or Non-DOT BAT Form (depending on the type of test requested).
- Complete Step 1 on the BAT Form:
- Donor’s first and last name
- Last four digits of SSN or ID number
- Employer and DER (Designated Employer Representative) information
- Donor’s first and last name
3. Donor Consent
- Have the donor read and sign Step 2 on the BAT Form, providing consent to test.
- Explain the testing rules:
- If the result is below 0.02, the donor is cleared and no further testing is required.
- If the result is 0.02 or higher, a confirmation test must be performed after a 15-minute wait.
- If the result is below 0.02, the donor is cleared and no further testing is required.
4. Prepare the BAT Machine
- Turn on the BAT device.
- Enter the last four digits of the donor’s SSN or ID number (matching what’s written on the BAT form).
- Attach a new, unused breath tube to the machine.
- Conduct an air blank test to ensure the device is reading properly.
- Follow the BAT Verbiage Form when explaining the process to the donor.
5. Conduct the Initial Breath Test
- Have the donor blow steadily into the breath tube until the machine indicates completion.
- If the reading is 0.02 or higher, proceed with the confirmation protocol.
6. 15-Minute Confirmation Wait Period
- Inform the donor that they must wait for 15 minutes before retesting.
- During this time, the donor cannot eat, drink, smoke, belch, or spit as it may affect the test.
- Both the donor and collector must remain in the lab for the full 15 minutes.
- When the timer on the BAT machine completes, attach a new breath tube and prepare for retesting.
7. Conduct the Confirmation Test
- Perform a second air blank on the BAT machine.
- Have the donor blow into the new tube to complete the confirmation test.
- If the confirmation result remains above 0.02, proceed to document as a positive test.
- Print the test result copies directly from the BAT machine.
8. Complete and Sign Documentation
- Review the results on the printed BAT Form.
- Have the donor sign and date at the bottom of the form confirming acknowledgment of the results.
- Apply two stickers on the form — one in the first box and one in the second box as required for positive results.
- Verify all fields and signatures are complete.
9. Finalize and Release Donor
- Inform the donor of their result and explain that it will be sent to their employer or DER.
- Advise the donor that, for safety reasons, they should not drive and may contact a ride service or their DER for transportation.
- Return the donor’s ID and thank them for their cooperation.
10. Reporting Results
- Notify the DER of the positive result as soon as possible.
- Upload the completed BAT Form to the company’s portal (Labb) or email the results to the client.
- Retain the collector copy for your records.
Tip: To reprint results on the BAT machine:
