Are student drivers required to obtain a CDL in order to operate CMV training vehicles provided by the school?

Not necessarily.
Student drivers may operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) for training purposes on public roads if they have either:

  • A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or
  • A valid Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) and meet the conditions outlined in 49 CFR 383.25(a) (e.g., accompanied by a qualified CDL holder, etc.)
