Breath Alcohol Test (BAT – Negative Result)

1. Test Order and Sequence

  • Always conduct the BAT (Breath Alcohol Test) before any urine drug test.
  • If both are required, complete and finalize the BAT process before beginning the urine collection.

2. Identify the Test Type

  • If the donor walks in with a Labb Passport or Authorization Form, you will use a paper BAT chain (DOT or Non-DOT, depending on what’s required).
  • No tablet is needed for BAT collections.

3. Greet and Verify Donor Information

  • Ask the donor for their Labb Passport or Authorization Form.
    • If it’s a Labb Passport, check the Notes section to confirm that a BAT is being requested.
  • Request the donor’s photo ID and verify that the information on the ID matches what’s listed on the authorization or passport.

4. Move to the Lab Area

  • Escort the donor to the testing area.
  • Retrieve a BAT Chain (DOT or Non-DOT) and fill out Step 1:
    • Donor’s first and last name
    • Last four digits of SSN or State ID number
    • Employer information
    • DER (Designated Employer Representative) information

5. Obtain Donor Consent

  • Ask the donor to sign Step 2 on the BAT Chain — this is the consent to test section.

6. Prepare the BAT Device

  • Turn on the Breath Alcohol Testing machine.
  • Enter the last four digits of the donor’s SSN or their ID number into the machine.
  • Attach a new, unused breath tube to the device.
  • Press the “Function” button to start the test sequence.
  • Conduct an air blank test to ensure the machine is reading correctly.

7. Conduct the Breath Test

  • Review the testing instructions with the donor and go over the BAT Script for consistency and compliance.
  • Have the donor blow steadily into the breath tube until the machine beeps or indicates completion.

8. Record and Review Results

  • If the test result is below 0.02, the result is negative.
  • If the result is 0.02 or higher, follow BAT protocol for retesting and documentation as outlined in the Testing Protocol Form.

9. Print and Distribute Copies

  • Print all required copies of the BAT result:
    • Donor Copy
    • Employer/Client Copy
    • Collector Copy
  • Review that all signatures and information are complete.

10. Finalize and Release Donor

  • If there is a urine test to be completed, proceed with that test after finalizing the BAT.
  • If no additional testing is required:
    • Give the donor their photo ID and the Donor Copy of the BAT form.
    • Thank the donor and let them know they are good to go.

11. Reporting and Uploading Results

  • You can report results in one of the following ways:
    • Scan and upload the completed BAT form to Labb or AIS, or
    • Email the completed form directly to the client or TPA.
  • Confirm that all required copies have been securely stored or sent to the appropriate contact.
