Onsite Rapid Testing (No Tablet)

When you arrive onsite, first meet with the DER (Designated Employer Representative). They’ll escort you to the testing area, usually near a restroom, where you’ll set up.

Prepare the Testing Area

  • In the restroom, apply tamper-evident tape to the sink handles and toilet handle.
  • Add bluing agent (tablet or liquid) to the toilet bowl.
  • Since you don’t have a tablet, retrieve a Direct Read form from Labb (printed copies or prefilled blanks).

Lay out your supplies: rapid test cups, BAT machine (if needed), security seals, transport bags (Quest/Averhealth), gloves, and your waste bag.

Intake & Identification

  • Follow normal clinic protocol.
  • Verify photo ID (no auth form needed with the DER present).
  • Have the donor empty pockets.

Complete the Direct Read Form

  • Fill out Section 1: Company Information.
  • Fill out Section 2: Donor Information.
  • Have the donor sign to consent to testing.

Collection Instructions for Donor

Tell the donor:

  • Do not flush the toilet.
  • Do not wash hands until returning the specimen.
  • Return the cup immediately after collection.

Receive & Assess the Specimen

  • Secure the lid on the rapid cup.
  • Check the temperature strip immediately; ensure it’s within acceptable range.
  • Allow 5 minutes for the test strips to develop (time it).

Interpret Results (Direct Read)

  • Negative result: Each drug line must be present (a line = negative, even if faint).
  • Non-negative / missing line(s): Treat as non-negative and proceed to confirmation.

Tip: Document the time read and any unusual observations (e.g., temperature out of range, donor behavior) on the form.

If Non-Negative (No Tablet Workflow)

  • You cannot scan the cup when offline; proceed with manual chain-of-custody:
    1. Apply security seal to the cup.
    2. Have the donor sign and date the seal.
    3. On the Direct Read form, mark only the drug(s) that are non-negative (do not check negatives to avoid unnecessary confirmation charges).
    4. Place the sealed cup into a Quest or Averhealth transport bag and seal it.

Wrap-Up & Cleanup

  • Return the donor’s ID; inform them they’re all set.
  • Let the DER know you’re cleaning up.
  • Remove all tamper-evident tape from sink and toilet.
  • Dispose of all waste in your own trash bag and take it with you (discard at the clinic).

Post-Visit Admin (Back at the Clinic)

  • Submit the confirmation to Quest or Averhealth.
  • Email Labb support to note:
    • You completed a collection without Wi-Fi using a Direct Read form.
    • The result was non-negative and has been sent to the lab for confirmation.
    • Include the donor name, date/time, company, and test panel.
